This is an old post from before but I am curious to see what your expectations are today in light of the numerous teams involved and newbie ownerships and veterans alike..
What do you expect from your Players and what do you expect from the Organization as a player?
As far as ownership goes, since I have somewhat a dual role as the head coach and interested party on the success of the organization, I have to answer this from both perspectives.
First thing we did was weed the garden. Before you can put a plan in place, you have to surround yourself with people that will help execute the plan. No more, selfish players or people that attach themselves to the organization. You must be willing to lose before you can win, if you know what I mean. We have cut execellent players who did not fit our "character standard". After the garden has been weeded, then you can plant the foundation.
Ownership wants:
1. Good, Morale upstanding people. Can you trust your kids with your players and coaches? If you can't then you might want to evaluate the people in place.
2. Be on time, practice, fundraisers, publicity events etc.
Being late is nothing but a lack of respect.
3. Communication: If you are gonna be late, call someone. We have limited time to put in a gameplan. I can't guess if your gonna be there this weekend. I move on if I don't hear from you. If you can't make an event, call and advise. DON'T abuse the call in procedure. It gets noticed when your car is always broke down or your entire family is in the hospital.
We also don't pay you so if you have a project or job that is gonna pay you $500.00 vs going to practice. You are a fool if you go to practice. Your family comes first. Then your football family .
If you can not pay for something, we are human, we can work with you but we are not mind readers. I hear about players that could not pay the commitment fee all at once so they quit. How can I help you If I don't know the problem?
4. Respect : for your teamates, coaches, yourself and the organization as a whole. You don't necessarily have to like the people you work or play with but have enough respect for them. You are right coach P, there is a buttload of man hours put in to make the organization sucessfull, Players only see the several hours a week they are at practice or games or events. They have no clue of how much "behind the scenes" work goes on.
5. Commitment: I want your commitment to the orgnaization, to your team and to your self.
I want 2 days a week for 2 hours at a time for practices. I want your unidivided attention and hunger to play football. We respect the player's time therefore we keep the practice time limited. However, at the same time, be prepared to work, there is no standing around for ANYONE at our practice.
We don't call it player fees, we call it commitment fees.
We don't charge vets. Only rookies. This year was $60.00. You provide your own equipment and we provide everything else.
6. Know your assignments and have fun and play some hard nosed football.
7. I almost forgot this one, appreciate what has been or will be done for you as a player. There are plenty of crap organizations that you be a part of. Don't expect everything but appreciate what we give you.
This year we obtained UnderArmour sponsorship, we gave every player, UA wristbands, Turfshirt, Gloves and all coaches rec'd UA Coaches POLOS.
We obtained equipment from the St. Louis Rams, gave every player shoes on an as needed basis and size, gloves, towels. etc.....
This doesn't mean that we owe you a girdle, shoestrings, mouthpieces ( but we did those too) Rib pads etc...
Players from Ownership:
1. First and Foremost, Honesty. If you tell me something, let it be the truth. Biggest way to lose a player. * Sometimes this is not ownership fault when someone else does not come through as promised or someone drops the ball...
2. Regulated practice schedule.. Don't waste my time if you don't know what you want to work on. I come to play and learn and get better. Have practice scripted if possible. This comes with good coaching staff. When I say staff, not 2 people with a whistle but actual position coaches.
3. Pay for transportation to games and hotel. Per diem would be a plus but not expected.
4. Accurate statistics. Why play the game if you don't know what you have done. How can I get better?
5. Good Video footage. If a player is trying to get the next level, scouts don't believe words...
6. Certified Athletic Trainer.... nothing worse than being in pain and the only consolation you will recieve is another player who doesn't know diddly about knee contusions etc....
7. Home field. A man without a home is a man without an identity. * not always owership fault, cost, the history or minor league football in that area might have burned bridges. etc...
8. Respect from the coaches and ownership about my time and me as a person.
9. A good league to be a part of. Who cares if we beat the sisters of weak and poor every year? Challenge me!
10. Believe it or not, Discipline. It helps mold the team.
11. Organization should go without saying. All the above will not be possible without organization.
For those teams who have one owner, Do you players now see a glimpse of what an owner should be thinking about? Do you think that instead of be part of the problem and complaining about the crappy practice field that you could lend a helping hand and call around to find a better one. Unless your owner has BIG BUCKS!!!,
He/she could use any help that you can give. I promise you that.
But I like this topic. I hope that I can open both sides "eyes" to the perception. Because contrary to popular belief, perception is not always reality.
